In November 2013, ITEES was commissioned by the Singapore Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) to establish and manage a Vocational Training Institute in Yangon, Myanmar, known as the Singapore-Myanmar Vocational Training Institute (SMVTI).

About the project

Project Scope: This turn-key project for the setting up of SMVTI was initiated in 2013 under a G2G agreement signed between Singapore and Myanmar.  The development of SMVTI took about 2 years which covered Campus Design & Development, Curriculum Review and Adaptation, Procurement of Equipment, Installation and Commissioning, Training of Trainers both in Pedagogy and Technical skills.

In Mar 2015, ITEES deployed 3 ITE staff to take on the positions of the SMVTI Principal and Head of Engineering and Technology (E&T) Department and Head of Hospitality and Tourism (H&T) Department, to help in operating and running the SMVTI which offers 6 Engineering courses and 4 Hospitality courses. The Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien Loong officiated the launch of SMVTI on 9 Jun 2016, with both Myanmar Minister for Education, H.E. Dr Myo Thein Gyi and Singapore Minister for Education, Mr Ong Ye Kung gracing the official launch with a tree-planting ceremony during the launch.

Impact & Outcome: There were about 400 students graduated from SMVTI every year since 2016.  The Singapore Internship Programme (SIP) for SMVTI graduates started in Sep 2016 whereby the top graduates had an opportunity to deepen and widen their skills through a 6-month attachment to companies in Singapore.  In all, 70 top graduates participated in the SIP when the project ended. The project was handed over to the Myanmar government in Feb 2020.

This project was co-funded by Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Singapore.
